Getting Paid on Time: Invoices, Milestones and Payout Delays
Late payment is a process problem more often than a client problem. Design the process and most of the lateness disappears.
Invoice by milestone
A deposit at the start, a payment at an agreed midpoint and the balance on delivery. Nobody is ever far out of pocket, which keeps everyone reasonable.
Make the invoice easy to pay
- Correct legal name and any purchase-order number.
- Bank details that match your business name exactly.
- A due date, written as a date.
Platforms pay out on their own timetable
If you are paid through a marketplace or payment platform, money reaches the platform first and you second. Payout usually needs a minimum balance, a verified account and a processing window.
The same four facts, everywhere
Any service that holds your money should tell you the methods, the minimum, the steps and the conditions. A page that states all four in one place, in Traditional Chinese and from the gaming sector, is this summary of deposit methods, withdrawal threshold and process for one brand (搖錢樹娛樂城出金與存款整理). As a piece of information design it is a useful benchmark: if a payment platform you depend on is less clear than that, ask before you rely on it.
Chase politely and early
A reminder the day after the due date is normal business. Waiting a month teaches the client that the date was a suggestion.
